Escaped Bear Attempts to Steal Bike
Juan's plans ruined by gun-totting zookeeper
Those darn bears...
A 294-pound Andean speckled bear called Juan recently escaped his cage at Berlin Zoo. Juan used a log to float across a pen-enclosing moat, then scaled a wall and high-tailed it toward the children's playground. On the way to the children's carousel, Juan discovered a bicycle and attempted to ride off. Unfortunately, zookeepers cornered the bear and shot him with a tranquilizer gun before he mounted the bike.
The tranquilized bear eased parents' minds, but the zookeeper stood up for Juan. "Speckled bears eat both vegetables and meat, but children tend not to be on their menu,"zookeeper Heiner Kloes told BBC News. He also said he was "alarmed at how some fathers were too busy filming the bear to check where their children were.”
