With a virtual city of mountain bike riders in Monterey, California, for the Hyundai Sea Otter Classic, Bike magazine's inaugural Reader Poll & Video Awards were bound to be popular. But no one imagined it would go off as hard as it did. The combination of riding's top athletes, filmmakers, flowing drinks, a hilarious MC and a crowd of over 1,200 made for an event nothing short of raging.
The two winners of the Reader Poll took the premier honors of the night. After the thousand-plus votes from Bike magazine readers were finally tallied, Cedric Gracia and Mary McConneloug came out on top. In the editorially chosen Video Awards, the prestigious Movie of the Year honor went to Freeride Entertainment's New World Disorder IV: Ride the Lightning. In fact, Freeride Entertainment nearly pulled a clean-sweep, winning all but one of the seven categories for which the company and its riders were nominated. "This is what happens when you put out two good movies in one year," said Freeride Entertainment producer Derek Westerlund.
