A Halloween costume party, a lip sync contest and a limbo competition typically have nothing to do with mountain biking. However, these activities are definitely on the itinerary for nearly 200 mountain bike enthusiasts who will descend on the Kern River Valley for its annual FAT Tire mountain bike festival.
Mountain & River Adventures, an outdoor outfitter in Kernville is hosting the festival, scheduled for October 16-19, 2003. The four-day festival offers guided mountain bike rides for persons of all riding abilities from novice to semi-professional. Festival participants are able to pre-select rides for each day of the event.

Trail rides cover epic descents such as the Cannell Trail located up-river from Kernville, the lower canyon's Kern River Trail and outstanding singletrack rides in the Alta Sierra area. A bike clinic is also offered for those pedal pushers still working on getting their wheels firmly under them. Bike shuttles are available on a first-paid, first-served basis.
Entry fees vary depending on your package. Riders can choose to participate for as few as two days, or as many as four days of biking. A two-day FAT Tire Festival entry fee is $75, three days is $90 and to participate in all four days costs only $120. In addition to guided mountain bike tours each day, entry fees can also include a Friday night pizza party, Saturday night Halloween costume party and Sunday morning breakfast with lots of free bike prizes. Additional event highlights include a bike rodeo, hill climb, mechanic's race and a night ride.
