Thomson's goal with the Masterpiece was to create the ultimate seatpost no matter how much it cost. The Masterpiece seatpost is designed to allow a 40-percent strength increase over the strongest production seatposts on the market. Considering the Masterpiece weighs in at 193 grams for the 330mm post and seat rail clamp, it is ideal for cross-country or road riding.
The Masterpiece comes in straight and laid-back versions and both have the insides of the tubes machined elliptically to save weight and retain strength. The Thomson design focused on the fact that when a rider sits on his or her seat, the weight of the rider tries to bend the seatpost backward. This produces more stress in the front and back of the seatpost than on the sides, so Thomson put more material where the stress is the greatest. Removing the materials from the sides where it is not needed saves 30 to 40 grams of weight depending on the length of the post.
The tube and head of Thomson Masterpiece seatposts are machined from one piece of high strength 7000 series aluminum--not pressed or bonded together. This allows for maximum strength and minimal weight.
