PREVIEWED: The 2007 Santa Cruz Bullit

A fresh twist on a classic frame

By Alan Davis

We’ve had these hot little photos on our computer screens for about a week now and, thankfully, Santa Cruz will finally let us post them on our site. At Woodward West, two weeks ago, Randy Spangler told us that the new Bullit frame was going to be released soon and that it was pretty damn sweet. Now we get to show you just what he was talking about. We don’t have one in our hands to wallop around on a hillside with, but the following list of frame details sure makes us wish we did.

The Bullit has been completely redesigned from top to bottom to tackle anything and everything. The only thing that they left untouched was the basic single pivot design and seven inches (178mm) of rear travel.

One of the most obvious changes is the inclusion of a 1.5-inch headtube, with significant gusseting, allowing you to build her up with any fork you like. You’ll also find custom drawn double-butted aluminum tubes forming a completely redesigned front triangle built with bar spins in mind. The new, intricately machined, and vastly stiffened swingarm pivots on a massive 20mm axle riding in oversize bearings with a lifetime guarantee. Frame detailing allows for multiple cable routing options (either full housings or split housings, take your pick), and room for eight-inch brake rotors too.

The rear triangle includes bolted-on dropouts that give you the option to run either standard, QR-friendly, 135mm rear dropouts, or 150mm thru-axle dropouts. You also get the factory option of a floating rear brake kit with the 150mm thru-axle dropouts—a popular aftermarket upgrade on the Bullits of yore. As an added bonus the frame is very easy to service. A single 4-5-6mm Y-wrench can disassemble all frame parts, and the swingarm bearing cups use a Shimano external BB tool. Like all Santa Cruz frames, you’ll be able to get her in a wide range of powdercoat as well as a few anodize finishes.

The original Bullit was an exceptionally fun freeride bike that broke new grounds in versatility and performance at an affordable price, so we can’t wait to test out this new frame.
