Over the last ten years Whistler has grown to be the world hub of freeride mountain biking. It didn't start here, but this is where it was "perfected." A small field kept the settings intimate as pros raced over a muddy and rocky 4X course at the '08 Bromont World Cup in Canada. Here's a gallery of images from the event.

Despite a limited XC field, with many Olympic pros opting to wait this race out till the big event in Beijing, the field still faced challenging conditions and a competitive race in Bromont, Canada.

An extra day of dry helped minimize muddy conditions, but the Bromont was greasy enough to challenge even the most experiences pros. In the end, Rachel Atherton remained dominant while Sam Hill used the opportunity to show off his mud-riding skills.

It is amazing the 4X race actually took place. First the rain cancelled practice on Thursday. Then the course was too soft to hold up to any substantial abuse on Friday--the day we usually get to see the qualifying. That meant that the racers would get to practice, qualify, and then race, all in one afternoon--an especially difficult pill to swallow if you also race DH on the same day, but that's racing…

7-28-08 // Photo Gallery: '08 Mt. St. Anne Cross Country
Sunshine all weekend dried out the muddy Mont Sainte Anne cross-country course, but a dousing of rain the night before the race kept the riding technical and everyone on their toes. Marie Helene Premont and Julien Absalon maintained their winning efforts against a field that's somewhat preoccupied with the Olympics just around the corner next month.

Rachel Atherton and Greg Minnaar turn it up for the first North American World Cup event of 2008, winning the downhil events. The rain held off just enough the night before the big event to dry out the course and improve traction for the best downhill competiors in the world.

7-23-08 // Photo Gallery: Mt Snow Nationals Super D
The Mount Snow, Vermont Nationals also saw the pros challenge each other on a super-D course. Beginning with a running Le Mans mass start, a field of aggressive XC competitors dove down the mountain and through the woods chasing after yet another national title.

The Short track. In other words: A suffer fest where you’re either on the gas or getting pulled. And even if you're on the gas, you might get pulled. It's just that kind of race--20 minutes of being deeeeep in the pain cave. Plus one lap. It's a great way to find out what you're made of.
