30 Years To Whistler

What began as a two-week road trip turned into something more. Traveling between Marin County, California, and Whistler British Columbia, two riders explored wild singletrack and gained a unique historical perspective on the sport. Riding landmark trails and meeting with key players in mountain biking’s development, they saw how the sport has evolved, and got a glimpse of where it’s going. BY LOU MAZZANTE

Out Of The Ashes

When downhill racing exploded 15 years ago, its fuse was lit in a town called Big Bear. This little village, in the mountains just outside Los Angeles, became the self-proclaimed “Downhill Capital of the World.” The world’s best racers honed their craft there and mobs of chairlift-riding amateurs inspired an era of rapid innovation. But when things tumbled out of control, Big Bear’s downhill scene collapsed even faster than it rose. Five years after its fall, is Big Bear ready to rise again? BY KIP MIKLER

Yes, yes, yes. I decided last year to quit XC racing for awhile and just have some fun again. It seemed like every ride was a training ride. No laughs, no taking in the scenery, just 10 feet in front of my tire and max heart rate and the latest in energy stuff. I bow before thee. In fact, I just bought a 2008 Felt Nine Pro and I'm rocking platforms! This issue hit home for me a little more so than the rest, thanks guys.

My dear and long-time friends @ bike magazine. I am a long-time subscriber and an original owner of a copy of issue 1, volume 1. But after 15 years (damn, I feel old)I have never felt so connected to an article as I did to "Out of the Ashes." The Mountain Dogs have long claimed Big Bear as their favorite stomping grounds and many (myself included) had participated in the Team Big Bear events. The hopes of bringing home an Amatuer Cup jersey was a primary source of training motivation. Not to mention the Nationals and World Cups...love it when the circus comes to town. I have vivid memories of Insane Wayne pushing his bike between dual-slalom runs. Or Johnie T, Ned and Tinker duking it out. Remember when Julie Furtado raced (and won) both Downhill AND crosscountry? I do. In fact, I remember more than the character counter will allow. But as my bro, The Rev, points out there is life after you hang up the number plates. bike (always a small b), thanks for all the great stories and photos (Dave
