I heard that you just recently moved to San Diego, California. Why was that?
JK: They let me live at the Olympic training center in Chula Vista. They are building a Beijing replica BMX track and some dirt jumps there. It’s an awesome place to be and you get so much more out of your training and the people there who support you. Everything you need is taken care of; all you have to do is train. It’s really positive.
How many other racers are at the site?

JK: I’m the only one so far. So I’m in the cafeteria eating lunch by myself, like it’s the first day of school, but I don’t really care. I have a lot of work, in my opinion, to do. There you can just get it done and it works out. Especially since it’s in Southern California I can just get in my car and go ride some tracks.
The weather is a lot different from Seattle isn’t it!
JK: I love Seattle, but to train for a summer sport you can’t stay there.
Were you in San Diego during the fires?
JK: I just got there two days ago so I missed the fires. It’s really sad what all the fires did and the smoke in the air and actually—it’s just like China…. It’s more training than you think. I’m getting my lungs ready (laughs).
So you aren’t doing any mountain bike races at all in 2008?
JK: It’s really hard because I always want to get on it and I love it so much, but I need to focus on this.
Do you have a full-time trainer, like a national coach?
JK: Yeah sort of, it’s my own coach that Red Bull helped me put together a program with. They got a coach for me and the training center put together a program. It’s really professional. BMX has never seen such a professional setup. Everyone at the training center is real excited because they’ve never seen it before. Someone who is a speedwalker wouldn’t have any idea what BMX is.
So the training center has a wide range of sports there?
JK: This particular one has a lot of track and field and softball and rowing and crew and kayak.
How big is the center?
JK: There are 50 residents; it’s more catered to the track and field people. It’s not ideal for everyone. It’s a hard place to be for a lot of people. You’re not at home and you don’t have your family and people can’t stay the night. You give up a lot to stay there, but at the same time you’re gaining a lot. For a year I can do it.
