Chris Eatough and Jeff Schalk of Trek-Volkswagen are the defending champions of the BC Bike Race. On Saturday, June 28, they will begin their quest to remain undefeated with a win in the second year of the event.
BCBR is quickly gaining a reputation as a premier event in mountain bike stage racing. It welcomes riders from weekend warriors to professionals, although the lengthy (50-100 km) stages benefit endurance riders like Eatough and Schalk.

However, 398 other competitors want a piece of the action. There are no vacancies in the 400-person field for this grueling seven-day stage race organized by Andreas Hestler, three-time winner of the TransRockies Challenge. Hestler is an obvious contender with partner Max Plaxton, and racing legend Tinker Juarez and partner Mitchell Peterson of Team Monavie/Cannondale are in the race.
BCBR held an online contest to award the final two spots to Fernanda Mejia and Alonso Sanchez, friends and amateur racers from Mexico. They won the chance to compete in the race, along with all their transportation, two Trek Fuel EX bikes and a ton of useful gear. No wonder the organizers call it "the ultimate singletrack experience" - and the racers obviously agree.
