The First Gravity World Cup Event of '07

5-14-07 // Events: Vigo World Cup Results

Gentlemen, get your champagne bottles ready...
Kathy Sessler

Sabrina Jonnier and Marc Beaumont were victorious at the Vigo World Cup downhill event this weekend. They were both lucky and skilled enough to fight through some rapidly changing weather conditions to take the top podium spots.

All the best riders were present at the first gravity World Cup of 2007. Sabrina Jonnier represented her rainbow jersey and confirmed her World Championships title. She even smashed the women’s final with a 7 second advantage over Tracy Moseley. The men’s race might as well have been a lottery with torrential rain, coming and going. Marc Beaumont picked the best card, as he started very early in dry conditions, while other favored riders rode in wet conditions. He beat Spanish matador David Vazquez by over 1 second and was 2 seconds faster than Greg Minnaar, who came in third.

The four-cross event was just as competitive, but with improved weather. Anneke Beerten got an excellent start in front of the current World Champion, Jill Kintner, after she had already won the semi-final. Jill tried several times to pass Anneke, but the challenging course proved too difficult to mount a successful attack, and Anneke too strong. The men’s final was very exciting and open to the finish line. Aggressive attacks in the first corner from Gee Atherton were risky, but worth it, as he found himself in front of multiple World Champion Brian Lopes and current World Champion Michal Prokop. Amazingly, Gee was strong enough to hold Lopes and Prokop off to take the win.

The next World Cup will be June 9-10 in Champéry, Switzerland for the 2nd round of the Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, presented by Shimano.
