Mavic announced it’s throwing its hat into the 29-inch wheel ring with a new-for-2008 29er adaptation of its Crossmax ST wheels, and Hutchinson announced it would be jumping in as well. The target weight for Mavic’s new wheels is 1745 grams (815 front; 935 rear), and they will retail for $775.

Mavic product honch Michael Berlinger said the frog emblem found on the new 29er hoops comes from the abundant frog population around the Mavic factory in St. Triviers, France. Although the frogs are a delicacy in France, Mavic apparently hasn’t seen fit to incorporate the frog into its marketing strategy until it entered the quirky world of 29ers.
The new wheels also will be available in a 20-millimeteer thru hub version, which will have a 2.5-millimeter wider flange to increase front-end stiffness. The new wheels will be available July 1.
Hutchinson teamed up with Mavic for the wheel launch to show off new 29er 2.1-inch Python tire.
“A lot of time and work went into this tire and I think it speaks to the growing 29er trend,” said Mark Gullickson, Hutchinson’s marketing manager and former ‘cross national champ.
