McCaul flips the near-lipless mid course drop and the crowd goes nuts!
On his first run, Lacondeguy crashed hard after failing to get his bike underneath him doing a superman tailwhip combo that left him battered and his full-face helmet destroyed. Strait wowed the crowd on his second run with a double tailwhip on the big bottom booter—it was the third time he tried it in as many competitions and he finally nailed it. Cam McCaul let it all hang out with a huge backflip on the mid-course platform drop, which nobody had previously tried to trick, and cleaned the rest of his run with solid jumps including a huge tailwhip to take the lead. Fresh off his Crankworx victory, Boyko answered McCaul’s challenge with a 360 off the same drop that Cam flipped, but fell on the course’s final jump. Semenuk’s riding belies his 16 year’s of age and he might have bested McCaul’s run, but he only X-upped on the mid course drop.
Berrecloth took the first run easy and the crowd was eager to see what he’d throw his second time around. He started with a huge 360 off the top ladder drop, a signature Bearclaw move, unfortunately, the bad luck that began with his crash at Crankworx followed him home and he suffered a huge shotgun blow out in his rear tire after the mid-course drop, ruining his chances for victory. In the end, McCaul walked away with top prize and $7,000 in cash. Semenuk took second, followed by Strait in third.
After the slopestyle comp finished, Berrecloth organized a moto-inspired high-jump contest. Battle-weary riders sprinted toward a quarter pipe and lofted themselves as high as possible over a pole. McCaul was having so much fun he even backflipped it. As the bar was raised the field was narrowed to Semenuk, Thomas Vanderham and Berrecloth. Finally the bar reached 15 feet above the quarter, and Berrecloth was the only rider to clear it, earning him $500 and an Oakley watch. It was a suitable ending for one of the discipline’s best riders, putting on a show—and a world-class event—on his home turf.
