You ride them. You love them. It's time to vote for your favorite trails
Contest: Bike Mag's Best Trails Of 2009
Photo: Sterling Lorence
Trails are the foundation of our sport. Whether they are steep, rugged chain-rattling downhills or all-day XC epics, from the rocks of the East to the loam of the West, great trails define our rides. Now it's time to vote for your favorites.
Bike magazine is turning to its readers to help pick their favorite trails in North America and beyond. We came up with 15 categories (listed below) that run the gamut of trail types, and we're asking you to step up nominate your favorite trails in each category.
The winning trails will be featured in Bike's annual Trail Guide, which hits newsstands this March. Even better, readers have a chance to win lots of incredible prizes. We're still gathering them up, but expect an announcement with a list of prizes soon.
Readers can nominate as many trails as they like, in as many categories as they want. Trails can also be nominated in different categories, if applicable. Nominations should include a brief 200- to 300-word description of the trail and why it deserves recognition. We also encourage nominations to include photos, videos, GPS data and anything else that shows why that particular trail rocks. Hell, draw on a napkin if you have to. The more creative, informative and fitting the nomination is, the better chance it has of winning.
All nominations need should be e-mailed to btrails@bikemag.com by October 7. And check back to bikemag.com for more updates on the process, prizes and a list of current nominations.

Best Hometown Trail System:
Turkey Mountain-Tulsa, OK
Why? It's right smack dab in the middle of the city and is accessible from anywhere within Tulsa by a 15 minute drive. It has almost everything, smooth buff singletrack, tricky climbs-steep but not long, fabulous descents-steep but not long, and all the rocks and roots a rider can handle. And of course it also contains some incredibly difficult technical trails. The saying goes that if you can ride there you can ride anywhere, and I believe it. Some of the trails will truly kick your ass and leave you scarred if you're not on your game!

I have to agree with Kevin English on this one. I have ridden Turkey and more importantly; all over the U.S. Turkey Mountain has everything, but what I love about it is the fact that you can ride all day and never see the same rock twice if you want to, but if you don't; you can string together just a couple trails for a short but satisfying ride.

I would like to throw in a nomination for a local trail by my house for the best flow, mostly due to it's name, the flow. I live an illustriously mountain biking lacking area of the country known as Iowa, and the little piece of heaven us three free riders enjoy here is our homestead and our home turf. We defend it to the death against rain storms, where the trail gets its name due to being in so many natural water runoffs, the 12 year old BMXer's who think that the trail should be made what they would define as "more ride-able", and to the never ceasing trampling of the migrating deer. In the end it is all worth it, that 40 second downhill of free ride fantasy placed in the heart of hoity-toityville, Iowa is the essence of what mountain biking is about to us. Blood, sweat tears, and a 8 foot step-up into a 12 foot double careening across a dry creek bed to a skinny that can barely support a rider like me and ending up at the only jump designed for BMXers on the entire course, but it's t

My favorite place would have to be Porcipine Rim in Moab Utah. It has awesome views, singletrack that goes on for ever & one of the "best" that I have ridden!!
The Garner Rec Trails in Garner NC are only 4 miles of trail, but there are numerous dirt jumps and a half pipe to play on. It has a lot of elevation with drops and creek crossings. It is not long but packs a lot of different technical challeges in a small area.

my favorite trail is the Two Elk Trail in Vail colorado.
12 miles (Ithink) of steep climbs, twisty technical descents and fast flowing single track starting from the top of Vail pass going through the back side of vail mountain and Ending in Minturn ( where there is good mexican food and beer!!!

Unnamed trail: Absolutely gruelling 10 mile loop around a reservoir called SplitRock Reservoir just outside of Hibernia, NJ. Long climbs, big rocks (some of them ARE split), fast techy descents, bat caves, and random cemeteries in the middle of the woods. I have a video of it up on Youtube: look up "single speed splitrock". We usually only ride it at night.

Blankets Creek in woodstock Ga for the best hometown trail system. We are the number 1 trail for rider usage in the country.
To give you an idea, we built a 4.2 mile trail in less than 6 months for about $50k. For the Beijing olympics, they built a 3.7 mile trail for $10 mil., and our trail is more aerobic and more of a challenge.
We have quietly been becoming an awesome model trail. Our relationship with the Army Corps of ENgineers is an example for the rest of the country to follow. Currently we have about 16 miles of trail, and about 200,000 riders annualy.

I would like to vote for the mid mountain trail in Park City Utah for the best epic ride. It is 35 to 40 miles long depending on where you start, and offers up a killer ride in either direction. It ends up being a 4 to 5 hour ride if you do the entire thing, and the whole thing is so much fun. The climbs are modest and the downhills are epic!!!! Park City is more than worth the trip to get there... and the town is a pretty good time outside of riding as well.

I agree with Cycobiker, Porcupine Rim would have to be the highlight in Utah. The rocky descent and utterly incredible vista makes it one of my all time favourite rides.
The day I rode it (July 4 2006) it was a baking hot day. At the end of the trail there is a natural spring with the coldest sweetest water I have even drunk. I wonderful day out.
As I live in the North island of New Zealand, the Whakarewarewa Forest at Rotorua would be my home destination. Over 100 kilometres of wonderful trails to suit all abilities.
But nothing can, in my humble view beat Whistler for the alltime magic holy grail of mountain biking.
The best trails, mountain biking culture and typically wonderful Canadian hospitality. There is something very sweet about drinking a cold beer in a bar at the trail end and watching slopestyle groms doing the business.I remember thinking that perhaps I had died and gone to mountain biking heaven.

Borderland State Park, Easton, MA
Borderland represents the Northeast very well. With more miles then you can ride in a day, you can take you pick the type of riding you want. One thing is constant here, rocks. Be ready to be shaken to your soul. It doesn't matter if your going up or down, twisting through a some fast single track. The rocks are everywhere. This place has something for everyone, from Bob's trail to the Nemba trail. You will be challenged and leave knowing you just rode some of the best trails in the Northest.

White Clay/Middle Run, DE gets my vote for best flow. You can ride here with seasoned vets or total noobs and your guaranteed to have a fun ride. Every trail has water bars, bumps, technical obstacles, tight turns and enough off trail hazards to keep you honest. Ride it blazingly fast to get the adrenaline pumped and scare yourself. Or just cruise it and realize that it is places like this that make mountain biking sooo much fun. I'm pretty sure that the trail builders must have all been BMX racers at one time because this place has that kind of flow. Every ride here finishes with everyone involved both smiling and looking forward to coming back again.

Monarch Crest in Colorado, should get mentioned.
Posted Sat Sep20, 2008, 11:40 AM By ElBikoBandito
I'm going to throw South Mtn Emmaus (PA) into the pot for best singletrack. This place is great!...There are over 20 miles of tight twisty singletrack on all levels, moderate stuff for newbees, crazy technical stuff, jump trails. The trail is characteristically northeast with rocks everywhere...big honkin boulders, little babyheads and everything in between with a smattering of logs followed by more rocks. Not very hardtail friendly but extremely fun.
Posted Sat Sep20, 2008, 1:44 PM By David Cunningham
My vote for best singletrack is the Blue Ridge trail in Wrightwood CA in the high desert of san bernandino. This trail is amazing. My brothers and I raced Wayne Croasdale down this trail back in the 90's. can hit over 40 miles/hr on extremely tight single track.

The "BEST HOMETOWN TRAIL SYSTEM"...
NEMBA has created the most incredible local riding in a place that was once deemed a cluster of horrible fireroads. The "new" trail system is sweet with fast, roller-coaster trails, and packed with an insurmountable number of rock features, skinnies, jumps, and berms. This is a place that you picture yourself at when you are dying to ride! This place is the DRACUT STATE FOREST in MASS.

I’d like to vote for Kingdom Trails in Burke Vermont as the best epic.
The depth and caliber of this well buffed system is hard to describe. It is flows so well, nice tight swoopy single track to super fun, unique trails such as side winder, a roller coaster like ride that must be experienced! The fact that the trails are on private property which riders are allowed to use through a land owners agreement makes it more special.
Blue Mountain in Peekskill NY as the best hometown trail system.
You ca ride Blue all day and not ride the same trail twice!! Trails range from lung busting climbs ( Neds left lung), to super rock strewn technical ( My Favorite trail) to super flow (Lower S I S). There is even a monster in the house( Monster Mix)!!!
Blue is an amazing network of trails that are used by a huge rider base. There is even a NORBA sanctioned race there as part of the H2H series, and is considered to be the most technically challenging race of the series.
Both of these trails are mus

My 3 favorite places to ride thus far in my short mountain biking career:
Kingdom Trails in VT (if you live anywhere within a 6 hour drive, take a weekend or a day off from work and, just GO!)
Bootleg Canyon in Boulder City NV (if you're in vegas, this is 45mins away--go rent a bike and hit these trails)
Camp Tamarancho in Marin County CA - what I imagine mountain biking is 'supposed' to be like out west--dry, fast, tough switchbacks. Really fun, 8mi loop.
In 3 weeks i'm going on a long ride near Boulder CO. I hope it will compare to these 3. Someday I want to go to Utah, Lake Tahoe and Whistler! This winter I will probably get to Fountainhead in VA, which is supposed to be great and tough.
And if you're in NJ (especially Central/Northern), bring your bike. The riding is surprisingly good here!

Best Hometown trail system= Pocatello, Idaho's City Creek trail systems. 50+ miles of every thing you could want.. climbs, cruizers, downhill, and great views of the city

As I said in the original post, it's smack in the middle of town, not the outskirts, it is entirely in town. Turkey Mountain is 4 miles away from the shopping hub of the city and just 7 miles from downtown.
Here's a brief breakdown:
Smooth:
Snake run, about 1.5 miles of fast bermed big ring fun, great for all riders
Top trail, about 1 mile of canopied smooth goodness, great for beginners
Technical:
LoChi
HoChi
Ridge Trail
Boner
Uber Technical:
Hi Chi
Jelly Legs
Fairy Dust
Mystery
Dead Possum
There are many other trails that are created and maintained by a Boy Scout camp that is onsite those trails fall under the uber technical title.

Best Shuttle Service- Betty Go Hard, Rossland, BC
This hard core women’s only service is perfect for everyone from the Rossland housewives to the most hard core locals and visitors. Betty (Tash is her real name) provides the best shuttle hands down in the world. She runs a series of rides for different levels of riders on different nights thru Rossland’s labyrinth of trails. Included in the price is two guides (one to run tail gunner), shuttle, and a tailgate party at the end. The party includes the most fabulous spread of food, booze and chocolate. What makes this service even better is that everything is done for you even the loading of the bikes on Adrenaline Adventures one of a kind trailer which holds 20 bikes. Perk- the owner of Adrenaline Adventures is not too hard on the eye- especially after an estrogen filled ride and a couple of glasses of Tash’s homemade sangria! www.bettygohard.com

Tsali, NC is the best singletrack if you want to ride 8,11,16, or more miles in a loop in a remote part of western NC with no one around especially through the week. Nothing crazy, just a steady ride with tons of views. Its like a roller coaster ride. Two bike shops are within a half hour away or less and of course food, beer, hotel, or camping.

I've been riding the trails in the Berkshire's for roughly 5-6 years. You can find almost any type of riding in these hills. On the base of greylock there is climbs that seem to go on for hours and in the climbs you have a to manuver over wet rocks and leaves. When you hit the downhills they get fast and steep, there are some excellent switch backs. If you go to the hawley state forest there is some of the tightest single track. It's the type of riding that you can not go extremely fast on but can find a fantastic rithum and flow right through it. If you look away from the trail for a couple seconds you'll be off the trail and looking through the woods trying to figure out where the trail went. The Berkshire's, Massachussetts.

I am voting for Kingdom Trails in East Burke, Vermont for best Epic. The 100 miles that you have is just amazing. Everything is connected, flows well and some special trails like Sidewinder, Old Webs, Tody's Tour and Heaven's Bench makes you wanna come back and try some more everyday! Every year, the guys make a great job to build some new ones and take care of the older ones and they don't disappoint!

my best trail that i have discoverd this year is big bear in southen california. you have fire road for miles for the novice riders. but they have so many tech single track that i can't get enough of. every time i ride there i find something new. but please get over the under six inch travel rule. i ride a giant xo 6.7 travel and have been just getting by because i know the lift operators. wish i could take my giant glory up there but people get turned down for full on downhill rigs.get over it already let the big bikes up. maybe next year i hope.

Shindagin Hollow in Ithaca, Ny is a less known spectacular east coast single track spot with killer marked single track and even better un-marked free-ride trails built in a beautiful spanning 14000 miles sq ft of forest with decent elevation. The free-ride and XC scene is strongly supported by local shops, websites, trail days and post ride beers. Largely un-noticed in the press Shindagin made its comeback after its renegade "area 51" free ride spot was removed by the DEC many years ago, only to be more systematically replaced in clutch areas of the woods by dedicated riders with much more well built, naturally influenced terrain and man made features. Most of the best unmarked runs include: Dizzy-Dee, Short-Bus and Paper Boy to name a few...Good luck finding them suckas!!!

Best single track in North Idaho-Penn trail (stop and enjoy the view of lake CDA), nail the 8 trail to the 10 trail, down the 7 trail (be sure to stop at the view point and enjoy the views of Hayden Lake and Lake CDA) past Jump station back to up to Penn station then take the Cave trail-roller coaster ride back to the parking lot (lots of smile factor in this ride). Ride time is between 2-3 hours, I would consider this ride to be moderate in difficulty. Maps available at the local BLM office. This is a multi-use trail so be considerate of other users.

A Syncline is a fold of rock layers. Synclines form when rocks are compressed by plate-tectonic forces. They can be as small as the side of a cliff or as large as an entire valley. Folds typically form during crustal deformation as the result of compression that accompanies organic mountain building. Organic mountain building, equals Great Trails!
The Syncline is not a trail, it's many trails. Your riding style might determine how your start your ride at The Syncline. If you're a Gravity rider, then most like likely you'll want to shuttle up Courtney Rd. to the top where you can access or connect to most trails. Xc racers/ All Mountain riders like myself & Jon (my riding partner in the videos) will ride to the top of Rattlesnake ridge from the parking lot via Maui or the Jeep Trail.
Once you're at the top, you've got the Crybaby: Single-track the width of your tire on the edge of the Syncline, a trail that earns it's name with every other new rider who trys it. The Crybaby conne

Turkey Mountain, Tulsa OK, why? Because this system is great for training for those epic CO rides. It has every kind of terrain, from steep rocky hill climbs, steep and rocky downhills, to buttery smooth singletrack. The best thing is, that you can get all three on one ride! And for those with no reserve, some interesting latter bridges too. This trail system got me ready to ride in Durango, so it has my vote!
