The best trick contest was held the day prior under beautiful sunny skies with great billowy clouds, but today was slopestyle finals. And holding with a long tradition of main events, it was held under the constant threat of torrential rain and lightning strikes.

The format for the slopestyle competition started with a "final", giving everyone two runs on the course, best run counts. After that the top-ten riders each took one more run down the course in what they called a "super final" to choose the big money winner.

As the finals began the sun peaked out from behind the clouds just in time for the Lacondeguy brothers to start the competition. Unfortunately, they got into town the night before from Spain after several days worth of plane delays. They looked tired and off the mark, but you can't blame them, it's a wonder they competed at all.

Riders began filtering their way down the course, making as much use of every obstacle as possible, but the weather would have nothing of it as gray clouds, lightning and then torrents of rain began pounding the Winter Park resort. It rained for at least an hour, delaying the competition almost two, so everyone headed for the lodge and a cup of joe.

After the deluge subsided a window of sunlight shined some hope that the contest would happen at all, and knowing that more rain was on the way, everyone got down to business. All the riders stepped it up many making clean runs on the course, tricking everything they could and giving the judges a challenge picking the top ten.

Aside from the cash and the glory, several amateur riders were competing at Crankworx Colorado to earn themselves a spot, in two weeks, at the Crankworx Whistler slopestyle competition. Once the top ten had been chosen it was clear that Kelly McGarry, Tyler McCaul and Justin Wyper were those three riders and began celebrating immediately.

The Super final went quickly, with all of the riders throwing progressively bigger tricks starting with Cam Zink, Jamie Goldman, Andrew Taylor, Cam McCaul and finally Brandon Semenuk. In the end, despite valiant efforts from Taylor and McCaul, Semenuk ruled every inch of the course with a confidence that bellies his 17 years and won his first slopestyle contest ever. Overall, the riding this year was heads and shoulders above last, the course was improved and the riders' skill has raised. Hopefully a similar progression will be witnessed in two weeks at Crankworx Whistler. We'll see ya there!
