Although the neighboring suburbs, debris piles and graffiti don’t exactly scream out “mountain bike race” the third stop of the NMBS series at Southridge Park in Fontana, California always has a healthy dose of racing action and excitement. Moreover, the Fontana event is the first stop of the ‘07 NMBS to include gravity events as well as cross-country races.

For the next four weeks riders will be traveling across Europe to compete in four back-to-back urban competitions in the locale and disciplines of Newcastle/North Shore, Milan/dirt jump, Madrid/Street, and Cologne/park before the finals a month later—a big air competition in Paris.

The boys at The Collective have recently begun production of their third, yet untitled film. You knew they would. They had to—the mountain bike world wants more of the beautiful cinematography, compelling stories and killer soundtracks—the juice that just won The Collective Best Director at 2007’s X-Dance, the action sports film version of the Sundance Film Festival.

Following the 2007 Sea Otter Classic we were invited to see and ride some of Fox Shox’s new 2008 hardware. We met at Laguna Seca racetrack Monday morning after Sea Otter to watch the infield get dismantled and ride some sweet new product.

Mavic announced it’s throwing its hat into the 29-inch wheel ring with a new-for-2008 29er adaptation of its Crossmax ST wheels, and Hutchinson announced it would be jumping in as well.

The Tomac brand of mountain bikes is back in action for 2008. The revived company’s three-bike lineup was revealed in Monterey, California, right before the Sea Otter Classic got underway.
 
4-12-07 // Cannondale Crank Recall
Cannondale is recalling some of its two-piece mountain and road SI cranks. The spindles attached to the drive-side crank on the Mountain SI cranks can crack and break, the company said. The recall affects only a few 2007 and 2008 model-year cranks.

The 2007 Giant mountain bike team assembled for a team camp at the company’s headquarters in Newbury Park, California, this week. With a blend of new and familiar faces, Giant’s cross-country and gravity racers soaked up some California sunshine, tore up the local trails, rubbed elbows with the staff at Giant USA, and dialed in new equipment during the days leading up to the Sea Otter Classic.

4-4-07 // Events: Greg Minnaar Conquers the Cape
Greg Minnaar, once again, tackled the famous Absa Cape Epic Mountain Bike Stage Race across the western Cape of South Africa. For the second time in two attempts he made it to the finish line after a grueling week of 7-hour days in the saddle, for a total of 886km.
